Communication is the art of building images that reflect
ideas. We must avoid making the mistake of ‘taking the sky on earth’,
instead of going up to it. Otherwise we will incur in the ‘old evil’
of making ideas profane.
For this reason I am afraid that the exasperation of the reduction of initiatory
ideas will cause their ‘fall’ in the cult of ideas rather than turning
them into instruments “…to build Temples to virtues and to dig deep
prisons for vices…” as ritual catechisms say.
The devotion for ideas often makes their substance trivial by killing their ‘soul’.
It reduces their meanings to a sort of ‘chatter’ lacking in obvious
results. The problem of obvious results as well, though, is a matter of points
of view and everyone cares only of what he can see. From the difference between
the man who follows the evidence and the man who looks for the occult substance
of the meanings, originates the distinction between the esotericist and the man
who is only using esotericism to entertain himself.
Therefore, when we deal with the ideas of communication and divulgation we can
reach different conclusions. They are all justifiable because we have understandable
limits in our abilities and qualities. Now and again, though, we should make an
effort and look over the hedge of our own garden. We should study better what
we know or what we want to know.
Provided that the true reason is knowledge and not the will to ‘be seen’
here and there without consistency.
It is fair to expect explanations; but in the expectation to conform every idea
towards the bottom, we might find the paradox of dialectic despotism typical of
purists, who tend to flatten any intellectual and spiritual specificity into simplified
ideas.
Freedom of expression is an inevitable right and duty. The best option would be
that everyone enriches from his own and other people’s good will, by looking
with interest at the differences with the others; only a cosmopolitan heart can
free himself from the bonds of a profane culture. We must certainly learn how
to use this kind of culture, but also to get rid of it when we grow up.
To grow up doesn’t mean to conform to our previous models. We need to
learn to overcome them by ‘transmuting’ our metals (habits). Therefore
to grow up means to overcome ourselves everyday.
Is this not, in fact, the sense of: learn to die everyday?
The ‘master’ that we need to kill, the physical master
according to the principles of Initiation, is not a real person, like some fools
think, but the impulses that make us slaves of our habits.
Habits are our bad masters. “They are the strings and laces that tie
us to the ground”, as Saint Augustine said.
How can we die staying the same? This is another obvious question
whose obvious answer might seem superfluous. We must always ‘stop’
and help those who live in the shadow but we can’t be complacent with their
habits. If the person in the shadow wants to ‘hold’ us we must get
rid of him, leaving him to his ‘choice’ that is certainly not the
Free Will of the heart.
I am sure I haven’t ‘communicated’ anything new, anything
that wasn’t already known and clearly expressed in every initiatory tradition.
In all my work I have never omitted to mention that the true occult Master is
the intelligence of one’s Self.
