Rhumkorf’s Coil (also Ruhmkorff Coil)
Invented by the instrument maker Rhumkorf in Paris, in 1851. This electrical instrument consists of 2 coils of wire wound one over the other upon a core consisting of a bundle of iron wires. One of the circuits is called the primary circuit and the other the secondary circuit. If an alternating or intermittent continuous current is passed through the primary circuit, it creates a powerful electromotive force in the secondary circuit. (EB)
