The Sacralization of the Masonic work - The “original sin” of every aspirant
The Sacralization of the Masonic work for the Benefit of the Humankind
The great utopia of the 3 rd Millennium
In the previous parts of this short essay we haven't talked about initiation but rather about the right to initiation and the benefits that it brings.
We have mentioned how notions that were part of the same unique teaching have been taken from the initiatory System; we have also said how the dismemberment of a unique "path of wisdom" accessible to a few people originated several "tracks of knowledge" accessible to many people. Nevertheless, it is now premature to evaluate the results brought by this vulgarization. The fact is that what has been separated in small parts – such as philosophy, science and religion – appears divided into incomprehensible fragments of the same thought, which is not easily understandable. The present initiatory goal is to join these "tracks" into a unique "path of knowledge"; esoteric analysis is the instrument used for this purpose.
Finally, we have shown the thesis of a right to initiation regarding both Men and Women. For many people this right has an initiatory fundament and an energetic logic.
Lesser initiations have been divided into two big sectors, viz. mysteriosophic and devotional initiations; we are still in the initiatory field but this reasoning is limiting. If we say that we want «common welfare» or to work «for the benefit of the humankind», though, we assume that this doesn't happen to the exclusive benefit of those big sectors. It is possible that the esoteric enquiry provides us with a key to interpret an ideal that is still relevant despite being ancient.
In order to respect the Principles of Masonry, we should analyze the keystones that support the ethical form of many Communities. We will gradually focus our attention on the desired key.
The keystone of every structure, even profane ones, is the ideal at the center of it; this ideal is usually resumed in a motto or in the synthesis of a word.
We often find words like love, good, wisdom and brotherhood; in the instance of initiatory Communities, they are accompanied by hyperbolic emphasizing adjectives like planetary, universal, cosmic, divine, etc.
Many imaginary thoughts have taken a utopian form. Some of them remained on a level of abstraction and became ideals; others materialized in a project.
Every human project is utopia to start with; the person who perceives it has to turn it into reality. Only inability, inconsistency or carelessness allow utopia to remain an ideal or unrealized form.
At the fundament of every great ideal there is a great utopia that awaits a form to express it. The abstraction of a project can be materialized in a reality. This event depends on the ability of the "builders" that will have to have a clear vision of the goal to reach and how to do it. Furthermore, the realization of a utopia is an action that causes the creative ability of a mind to have continuous crises. The latter must never reach the critical point, though; otherwise the breaking would mean the failure of the work.
The crisis of tension in the "builders" has always marked the fall of the ideal and the failure of the work. Nevertheless, history tells us that the utopia of utopia exists. Indeed, certain structures took shape around the non realization of their ideal, where only the memory of the original utopia remained. Certain popular religions are an example of this; they have placed at their center the cult of a utopia, rather than the criticism to their inability to realize its essence.
In the Masonic root there is a utopia, summed in the ritual statement that: «the work of every Mason is directed to the Benefit of the Humankind».
When Freemasonry states that they want to operate for the benefit of the whole humankind it is an ideal form to express a utopia that can be partly realized. It helps us understand how useful the esoteric analysis is. For the great Initiate the true Work of Sacralization is on the matter which could be described in a few words as follows.
The greater initiate uses and refines himself; therefore he elevates and emancipates the matter of the four elements of Nature that are: earth – physical body and impulses; water – emotions and words; air – thought and actions; fire – spirit. When the initiate emancipates himself he also emancipates the planetary Mater Matter (the true Widow) which he is made of. By feeding on the material products of the planet he converts them into more and more refined thoughts and emotions. Through these actions and emotions, the initiate fills the material space. The elements of this subject, which we have just grazed, are ideas that don't concern our speculative process; indeed, the purpose is to realize a closer and more concrete goal, viz. to provide a thesis for "a good start" of the initiatory Work.
The "original sin" of every aspirant
In the initiatory allegory the light is the symbol of truth and the color white is its manifestation, whilst the color black is its contradiction, like illusion is the reflection of deceit. Whilst the life of the initiate struggles on the crossroad between truth and deceit, his ethics looks for the division between being (essence) and appearing (substance). The tension that every aspirant has towards the truth, whiteness and light is stained by a shadow created by the cultural mark of his past.
Illusions, appearances, ignorance and superstition are all lunar ingredients shared by profane cultures; adepts will have to transmute them into their solar counterpart by «smoothing the surface of their inner Stone». This long work of transmutation is the initiatory path.
We can deduce that because of this stain every aspirant starts emotionally disadvantaged compared to the situation that "could be" if he started from what we can call a revolution (in an astronomical sense) of his inner sky.
The statement quoted above, viz. that we could start from an inner position more suitable than the profane one, sums up all the sense of practical realization of the Masonic utopia.
The keystone of the speculative building is in the word to educate or education. It is undeniable that if we started from an educative position, not jeopardized or destroyed by the interference of profane models, the adept's work would be much easier. The Masonic utopia could positively respond to these expectations by initiating Men and Women, not only symbolically. Freemasonry could form initiates that would become Fathers and Mothers. Their children wouldn't be directly ‘hit' by the chaos of profane models. Initiated fathers and mothers would contextually make an educative selection of the best models and their languages. This would let their children start (Freedom of choice) from a threshold of advanced science and conscience. The "evil" that marks the origin of every initiate would be shadowed; his path would become longer, deeper and wider than the path covered by an adept starting from the "so-called" normal level.
In the 3rd Millennium the initiatory education of Men and Women could be the challenge to utopia to work for the Benefit of the Humankind. Freemasonry would then materialize an element of sacralization in Its Work.
It is our task to deal with the subject in a new perspective, in the view of a re-found Sacralization of the initiatory Work of Freemasonry.
