The magic of ephemeralness

I would like to broaden the boundaries of the frequent pseudo-scientific or pseudo-initiatory inconsistencies that so often we face and ... rule out.

Frequenting various ‘basins' of esotericism I have met phenomena that seem incredible, such as proper ‘media pseudo-religions' passed off as new age . But even for the fanciest proposals, incredible or even unreliable, there was a queue to ‘buy' one.

Mysterial initiations, the acquisition of superior powers or even trying to secure oneself some magic or miraculous gift has always been the secret aspiration of many people.

On this topic we can remember the ‘miraculous novelties' offered in the last twenty years, in the last two centuries or even further back.

It is well-known; many people think that dreaming allows to live better. This is the sense of ‘oneiric cultures' (Jung).

Perhaps it is true, because if we started looking at the mirror of truth not everybody would like what's in it.

So, those who don't like themselves but cannot admit it must find alibis or create transference in order to exorcize their faults and weaknesses.

This is the true function of ‘cultural fashions', folklores that promise miraculous solutions. If the ‘remedy' costs a lot, only the fact of being able to flaunt its possession with those who don't have it justifies the expense (and the effort).

The common denominator of these adventures in miracle is that they are supposed to remain unexplained, otherwise the magic disappears (see the Closed System described by Popper*).

This is how ‘initiatory science' becomes hated by the unusual esotericist as well as by the uncertain devotee, who, enchanted by a doctrine, don't recognize the ‘human, too human' limits of certain Leaders.

This way the ‘stalls' will multiply and they will have more and more novelties. And I think it's fair enough, because until there will be someone who wants to buy dreams there will also be who gains and speculates on their desires, offering a way to remain in total disengagement.

What most of the ‘public' ask for is indeed disengagement from work, decision, research and fight to obtain some virtue, even a lesser one.

Although for the Initiate this is the most worn-out of paradoxes, hoping is certainly easier than committing. And perhaps, sooner or later something will happen. But is it true?

The delusion of obtaining some virtue only with the ‘touch of ephemeralness', perhaps given on the ‘edge of a sword' is the true magic of credulousness. And still today delusions are very profitable ‘goods'.

(*) ‘Closed systems are made of totally abstract (abstruse) theses, ideological statements or religious dogmas that are confirmed only inside their structures and through their instruments, therefore they can't be denied. These are said to be self-immunizing, because they are based on reasonable modules, supported without questioning any part of them, immunizing them from any kind of denial deriving from a dialectic debate or an intellectual confrontation. Furthermore, we consider as a closed system all ideological theses or beliefs that claim to be all-inclusive propositions, viz. those speculative systems where an explanation of and for everything is found.'
